Mine Your Rolodex
Nowadays we store contact information in our phones, tablets and computers. But the metaphor of a Rolodex still holds. It’s a way of discovering yourself through those you know.
Let’s get right into it. Here is chapter 4 of Five Life-Changing Ideas.
Next to family, the greatest impact on our lives are friends, teachers, and those we work with. Think of all the people who have influenced you (both positively and negatively).
Go through your Rolodex, school yearbooks and calendars to find the people who have had the greatest influence on your life.
You’ll want to include people you like and admire.
Also list those who have gone out of their way to make your life miserable. Sometimes your enemies help clarify very quickly what’s important to you. Someone who steals from you may remind you how much you value honesty.
List a person and then describe 3 memorable events related to that person.
What characteristics do these people have in common?
What characteristics do the events you listed have in common?
Summary
It can be quite surprising how many people we know. And how few.
We’ve encountered very few of the billions on the planet. But those we have met can have a huge influence on us.
Look back at your current thoughts, your childhood and the people you have known, loved and hated.
What do they tell you about yourself?
What have you learned so far?
